Meliora Design is providing Structural Engineering to SEPTA to support the Rehabilitation of 16 Traction Power Substations within SEPTA’s transportation system. Nine of them are AC substations; seven of them are DC substations; and all of them were taken to a 50% completion level for a Design Build Contractor to complete.

The structural work began with a thorough inspection of all the substations with input into a complete assessment report. The remaining structural work entailed construction documents and specifications detailing rehabilitation of existing structural steel and foundations, modifications to existing structural elements - steel gantries, foundations, masonry walls, structural building frames, as well as new steel and foundations. The modifications were required to support new loads, new equipment and to add safety features to the existing construction. Two of the substations require entirely new buildings (masonry and steel framed) and one underground substation requires a new building added above grade supported on strengthened existing structural elements and slabs.
 
The project required close coordination between all the disciplines (electrical, mechanical, architectural, civil) to avoid conflicts. All the work products were shared using ProjectWise Design Integration and AutoCAD.
