The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center campus, which opened in 1952, is located on 700 acres in the rural heart of Chester County. The campus offers some of the finest veterinary services available anywhere in the country for horses, cattle, camelids, pigs, goats, sheep and other large animals, and its Hospital for Large Animals is internationally renowned for its standard of care.

SMP Architects led a multidisciplinary team, which included Meliora as civil engineer, in an update of the previous 2007 master plan. The new plan, which was completed in 2020, focused on a phased campus expansion that proposed several new medical and support services buildings and additions and renovations to two existing buildings.

Within our scope of responsibility, we addressed circulation needs for pedestrians and large animals; parking; utility challenges related to onsite water supply and wastewater; stormwater management; local zoning and permitting requirements; and historic and cultural resource protection.

Following the master plan project, Meliora supported a feasibility study for the Gail P. Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education, which was completed in 2021.
